Bic's French Leave

"Bic Runga's French is improving. The Paris audiences for the New Zealand singer-songwriter have already heard evidence of this in her song introductions during shows in her new city of residence.

"It really means a lot to an audience for a performer to try to speak their language, no matter what sort of mess they make of it," she laughs down the phone line".

"What’s on the cards?
I’ve got a series of shows in Australia. And my record is coming out in Europe. I’m [also] gonna be singing on Shayne Carter’s new [Dimmer] record. I’m gonna do a session with him. He’s a good friend and I’m happy to be his lowly backing vocalist. He’s gone even more seventies-Marvin-Gaye-kind-of-sexy-MF."

bic runga indulges melanie sheridan’s ignorance

Melanie Sheridan

"The very chirpy Bic Runga doesn't mind at all that I've never heard any of her songs, and that 20 minutes ago I didn't even know I was doing this interview. "No worries, it's pretty straight forward at the moment," she says. "I can just run you through it." Okay.

"Well, I'm moving to Paris," she proclaims, "semi-permanently. My second record, Beautiful Collision, is coming out in Europe. So these shows coming up in Australia will be the last ones for a while."

Bic's Beautiful Success
Sarah Stuart

"Yesterday the 27-year-old flew to Sydney for a series of Australian gigs, five of which were sold out before she landed. She's been on a rapid French language immersion which has been surprisingly easy to navigate ("it's like music. It's copying sounds so my pronunciation is very good") and next month she leaves New Zealand to live in Paris, the start of a push into European charts.

She's set up her own record label Noo Shu, is producing for her first young artist, Australian Tim Guy, and is happily in love with photographer Daryl Ward. "

Under Surveillance- New Artists You Should Know About: Bic Runga
Sean Plummer

"Bic applies this same “healthy cynicism” to her career. “I think I just had one too many industry lunches,” she says of her impatience with the music business. “A lot of the time you’re surrounded by people who don’t really love music, and when you’re outnumbered, so to speak, you question where the reality is. So it’s my reality versus their reality, and if they think that Britney Spears is really really great then maybe she is, you know? And I do think she is a great entertainer and all that but it’s not even the same planet as what I’m living in.”"

Bic Runga wants the world- Singer performs at the Horseshoe
Vit Wagner

"Runga, who has four accompanists with her on the road, writes, arranges and produces her studio albums, while playing everything from guitar and dobro to piano, harmonica, Wurlitzer and, yes, drums.

Initially, Runga approached songwriting great and fellow New Zealander Neil Finn to produce Beautiful Collision. But Finn, who sings backup on a handful of tracks, urged her to go it alone."

A Beautiful Collision with Bic Runga
Jon Das - Princess Margaret, Surrey

y: What inspired you to pursue a career in music?
B: I believe it was my sister; she sort of paved the way for me when she became a singer. I always used to look at her and want to be just like her, I thought she was cool.

BIC RUNGA: Her Three-Year Journey Ends In a Beautiful Collision
JOANNA VARIKOS

"What’s next for you?

Well, I’m renting this house in L.A. in December and January and it’s got a grand piano, so I just want to do a four-track LP from home and maybe pitch that to a producer. I don’t want to go through trying to self-produce or record right now. But I would go back to that maybe when this experience is a bit more distant."
