"Most played recording on
Australian radio last year was the Lighthouse Family's "High"
(Universal), followed by Jennifer Paige's "Crush" (Shock) and Goo Goo
Dolls' "Slide" (Festival). At No. 4 was Bachelor Girl's "Buses
And Trains" (BMG), the first of the Australian tracks. The pop duo had two
other tracks in the Phonographic Performance Company Of Australia (PPCA)'s Top
100 list of most broadcast tracks, with "Treat Me Good" at #28 and
"Lucky Me" at #80. There were 26 Australasian entries in the Top 100 -
two of these were from New Zealand, with Neil Finn at #60 with "She Will
Have Her Way" and #78 with "Sinner", and Bic
Runga at #14 with "Sway". Some of the Australians were
multi-placed. Natalie Imbruglia (based in London, signed to RCA UK) at #12 with
"Wishing I Was There", #42 with "Torn" and #59 with
"Big Mistake". Marie Wilson is at # 48 with "Won't Keep A Good
Girl Down" and #62 with "Next Time". Tina Arena at # 76 with
"Now I Can Dance" and #100 with "I Want To Know What Love
Is". Other acts included Savage Garden at #27 with "The Animal
Song", John Farnham & Human Nature at #77 with "Everytime You
Cry", silverchair at #71 with "Anthem For The Year 2000", Merril
Bainbridge at #91 with "Lonely" and Rick Price at #98 with "Where
In The World". New to the list were Powderfinger at #22 with "The Day
You Come", The Mavis's with "Cry" at #53, the Living End who had
two entries at #65 with "All Torn Down" and #79 with "Save The
Day", Josh Abrahams at #72 with "Addicted To Bass", Ben Lee at
#85 with "Cigarettes Will Kill You" and Regurgitator at #90 with
"Polyester Girl".
The top 12 most broadcast artists of
last year were (1) Shania Twain, (2) The Beatles, (3) Madonna, (4) Elton John,
(5) Bachelor Girl, (6) Natalie Imbruglia, (7) John Farnham, (8) Goo Goo Dolls,
(9) Alanis Morissette, (10) Elvis Presley, (11) Savage Garden and (12) U2. Of
the Top 50, there were eleven Aussie acts, with Human Nature at #16, Tina Arena
at #26, Crowded House at #30, Powderfinger at #32, The Living End at #36, Cold
Chisel at #42 and Marie Wilson at #50. Of those in the Top 50, only 24 could be
said to have started their music careers in the '90s.
