NZ Tour 2002 News Articles Changing places for tour suits Kelly fine
TRADING PLACES: Bic Runga supported Australian Original content copyright 2002 to Nelson Mail
Original article is at: Stuff.co.nz Date: 13 December, 2002 By: stuff.co.nz Bic Runga may be the headline act, but tonight Nelson will be treated to its first visit from renowned Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly, whom Runga once supported on tour. Many people over 30 years old would argue that perhaps Runga should still be supporting Kelly, 47, when they play at the Nelson School of Music, but he disagrees. "I wouldn't have thought that. The arrangement seemed right to me." The Runga connection arose when she opened for Kelly on a summer tour in Australia a few years ago. She also sings on Kelly's most recent album Nothing But a Dream. Kelly says he is a big fan of Runga and Dunedin bands like the Chills and Straitjacket Fits. More recent Kiwi bands he likes are the Datsuns and, of course, fellow support act Goldenhorse. New Zealand music has an interesting scene and a "unique sensibility", he says. "The best New Zealand music has a mystery to it; all good music has." Kelly is a regular visitor to New Zealand but this tour is a chance for him to play smaller centres he had not visited before: Nelson, Tauranga and some place called "Wanger-rey". This time he is playing a 40-minute set with his nephew Dan, a fellow singer-songwriter who lives with him in Melbourne. Dan's first EP will be released next month. Tonight, fans can expect some old songs, a few new ones and a "good show", he says. The tour is also an experience for Auckland's Goldenhorse, which is promoting its new album Riverhead and the single Maybe Tomorrow. The album is a compilation of two years' worth of ideas, says guitarist Ben King. The band gets to play just a 20-minute set, enough to fit in five songs, but that is satisfying, he says. "The tour can only benefit us, really. We find the audience is coming along expecting a certain standard of music and that's working in our favour." Goldenhorse, Paul Kelly and Bic Runga perform tonight at the Nelson School of Music. Doors open at 7.30pm. Original content copyright 2002 to Nelson Mail
