Hometown fans queue for Runga

Chilly fans queued outside Christchurch's St Michael and All Angels last night, eager to be blessed by the voice of the city's own pop angel, Bic Runga.

The impressive timber building, Christchurch's first church, was filled to capacity for the first of three hometown concerts, part of Runga's national Acoustic Church Tour. All 400 tickets sold out well before the night, said Runga's manager, Campbell Smith.

And, he said, the performance was "one of the best" of the tour.

"It was brilliant. She sang really well, the acoustics were fantastic and she's just happy to be home."

Runga's other shows, in Christchurch Cathedral tonight and tomorrow, were also sell-outs, he said.

The 28-year-old singer came up with the idea after she played at the beautiful 18th century Union Chapel in London last year.

Accompanied by Ben Maitland and supported by Australian singer/ songwriter Tim Guy, Runga has had high praise from reviewers and fans.
