"I like that light fitting too," she said pointing to the huge chandelier in the middle of the hall above her. Minutes earlier she'd quietly walked on to the stage and with a shy smile and a wave, sat down with her guitar and sang beautifully When I See You Smile from her platinum CD Beautiful Collision. It was the first of two sellout farewell concerts in Cambridge by the 27-year-old - the other is tonight. She leaves for the UK on Sunday to start an assault on the European charts and is expecting to be based in Paris for more than a year. Her concert at the 3500-seater Union Chapel in London next Thursday sold out weeks ago. The 500 people in the crowd loved the best-sellers like Something Good, Sway, Drive and Listening For the Weather – featuring a Runga harmonica solo worth the $45 price of admission on its own. "So what's it like living here? It looks nice," she said. Then later she spotted people outside on the footpath looking in. "Tell them to come in. This concert sold out ages ago so we put on another one. I really appreciate it." Original content copyright 2002 to Waikato Times |
