Musicians Involved in the Beautiful Collision album The musicians that supported Bic on Beautiful Collision:
Musician: Dave Dobbyn Role: Guitars on "Get Some Sleep" Bio: Dave Dobbyn has been an important and productive figure in New Zealand music for the last 3 decades. He’s been through two chart topping bands and has churned out more hits than can be counted on fingers and toes.A stint in the late seventies with Th' Dudes spawned such party anthems as Be mine tonight. In the mid eighties he formed DD Smash and produced the kiwi classics Whaling and Outlook for Tuesday (not a bad video either). In 1986 kiwi cartoon Footrot Flats hit the big screen and along with it came Dobbyn’s hugely popular soundtrack (accompanied by reggae group Herbs) - Oughta be in love and Slice of heaven. Shortly after that Dave Dobbyn began his solo career. His first album, Loyal in 1988 produced two hit singles, the title track, and the bouncy Love you like I should. In the nineties, Dave lost the mullet and released his second solo album Lament for the Numb, recorded in LA during the riots. He quickly followed that up with Twist and then a stint with the NZSO for Split Enz tribute album ENZSO. Not done yet by any means The Islander was released in '98 and just last year to mark the 20th anniversary of Dave Dobbyn's first recordings, Sony Music compiled a career spanning retrospective -Overnight Success- the definitive Dave Dobbyn collection. Musicians: Milan and Tim from Pluto Role: Background vocals Bio: Pluto began in New Zealand in 1994. But after two years the band left for London, and as Johnny Custard they attempted to find fame in Germany. A disastrous tour ensued, a tour from which the band did not survive. Key members, Milan Borich and Tim Arnold went back to London and continued writing together. It was during this period that many of the songs, which now appear on ‘redlightsyndrome’, were written.Returning to New Zealand in 1999, Milan and Tim began recording some of the great tracks that will now appear on ‘redlightsyndrome’. The next year was spent touting these recordings to local record companies and completing a line-up. After signing to Antenna Recordings, Pluto released their debut EP A1A2, in September 2000. The EP has been a stand-alone success as Pluto has continued success on student radio and Channel Z. While recording, they met Matthias Jordan whose work as a jazz pianist is quite phenomenal. The addition of Matt’s keyboards to Pluto’s music has helped make it the distinctive sound we hear today. ‘Matt brought a new level of musicianship to what Milan and I were trying to do’ says Tim. The talented trio then saw the addition of Michael Franklin Brown who had previously been drummer with New Zealand rock band HLAH. Then, completing the line up was Mike Hall, of Balance and Brunettes fame. With this stylish and experienced team there is nothing to stop them taking New Zealand by storm and veteran New Zealand musicians Neil Finn and Bic Runga have been quick to recognise this. Pluto played with Finn on his provincial tour earlier this year and have recorded songs with Bic Runga for her "Beautiful Collision" album. Bio from EMI Music NZ

Michael Brauer (Coldplay, New Radicals) for mixing of album in New York "If there is one word to sum up mix master Michael Brauer’s list of credits, it is 'eclectic.' That impression would be fine by Brauer, who has made a point of constantly expanding into new musical territories. Along the way, Brauer’s work has enjoyed commercial and critical success in genres as diverse as urban, R&B, country, alternative, rock, mainstream, rock and pop, thanks to his knack for creating mixes that capture the intent of the songs. Unlike some mixers and producers, Brauer doesn’t leave an identifiable sonic stamp on his work. That anonymity keeps him from being pigeonholed into a particular category. However, one element Brauer has worked on tirelessly - and which has set his mixes apart from the pack - is his sophisticated application of compression. While many mixers may throw an entire mix through a compressor to even out the overall dynamics, Brauer refines the final sound with a multilevel approach that keeps the compression of one part of the mix from inflicting itself on another area of the soundscape." -- (Billboard ProFile interview by Rick Clark ‘94)
