There are days when you wake up groggy from a long night of whatever it was you were doing. You have a bit of a headache, and you just need something to soothe you, whether hung over or just plain exhausted. "Beautiful Collision" by New Zealand singer Bic Runga is the perfect album to do this. Runga's voice is very reminiscent of songstress Norah Jones. Much like Jones, she has a slightly jazzy, laid-back sound. This makes it the perfect background for those times when you need to hear some music that, in the words of "High Fidelity," you can just ignore. However, if you choose to listen to it (or, more accurately, not), you will hear the rich soundscapes of this album through the beautiful vocals Runga provides mixed with her confessional lyrics. From beginning to end, this album holds up rather well. It manages to stay relaxing and low key without becoming bland and uninteresting. This is an example of what a Saturday morning album should be - lush yet low key and altogether soothing. Original content copyright 2002 to Daily Nebraskan
