Commentary:   

On January 16 Sony Music released a double CD featuring the Top 30 songs written by this country's composers over the last 75 years.

The songs were announced on Monday 29 October 2001 in what can only be described as an awe-inspiring night at the annual APRA Silver Scroll Awards.

The awards ceremony is held annually to find the 'Song of the Year' written by a New Zealand artist. It is judged purely on the strength of the composition as opposed to popularity or commercial success.

In addition to this year's show, the Australasian Performing Rights Association, set out to find our Top 30 songs as part of the associations 75th anniversary celebrations.

At an earlier function last month, APRA released Songs number 30 down to 11, leaving the last 10 to be announced at the Silver Scrolls show.

Sony Music intends to contribute a percentage of income from sales to a charity, soon to be announced by APRA.

"This album represents an outstanding body of work by this country's most accomplished composers and we rate it as an absolute necessity for every CD collection", said Sony Managing Director, Michael Glading today.
