Former Christchurch musician Bic Runga is in line for several big gongs at
this year's New Zealand Music Awards.
Runga is a finalist in seven categories, including album of the year, for the
multi-platinum selling Beautiful Collision, and single of the year for Get Some
Sleep.
It's a case of deja vu for the now Auckland-based Runga, who won seven Tui
Awards in 1998 following the success of her debut album.
Runga is one of three artists who dominate this year's finalists, announced
yesterday.
Auckland's Che Fu, who was a big winner last year, is a finalist in five
categories while young Auckland group Nesian Mystik, whose debut album
Polysaturated went to No 1 last year, are up for eight awards.
Runga will be up against another musician with Christchurch connections,
Anika Moa, in the best solo artist category, along with former True Bliss singer
Carly Binding. Runga and Moa are also up for best female vocalist, along with
Kirsten Morelle from Auckland alt-rockers Goldenhorse.
Moa is also nominated for best single, for her Falling in Love Again, as is
Che Fu (Misty Frequencies), Goodshirt (Sophie), and Nesian Mystik (It's On).
Acclaimed garage rock-revivalists The Datsuns, who've been grabbing headlines
overseas, are up for best group award and best album for their self-titled
debut. The Cambridge band are also up for biggest breakthrough act after their
successes in Britain and the US.
The other album of the year finalists, as well as Runga and Nesian Mystik,
are sonic rockers Pacifier (formerly Shihad), and Goldenhorse for their debut
Riverhead.
Christchurch's Salmonella Dub, who won the group of the year award last year,
are in the finals of the newly created best dance album category for Outside the
Dubplates, the remix album of their triple-platinum selling Inside the
Dubplates.
The awards ceremony will be held at the end of this month.
