Central Otago sunshine was not what the director ordered for a video for Bic Runga's latest single.

He wanted cloud formations.

And American director Jim Gable, on his first visit to New Zealand, had his wish come true at Clyde yesterday.

Get Some Sleep , the song by New Zealand singer-composer Runga , went on to radio play lists two days ago. It is about travelling in a pirate radio van.

The song video is being filmed in Southland and Central Otago and is for the United States.

"We wanted the moodiness of a dull day, not sunshine. The cloud formations today are just what we needed," Mr Gable said yesterday.

The van, singer and film crew did a quick trip over the Clyde dam deck and a spin through Clyde.

Christchurch-born Runga (26) said in an interview during a break in filming at Clyde that she had visited Central Otago many times.

"I think I could even retire here," she said.

Being able to work with Queenstown film crews was an amazing experience, Runga said. "They're world class."

She was delighted to be working with Mr Gable, who had worked with the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Matchbox 20 in Australia and New Zealand group the Feelers.

Location manager Harry Whitehurst, from Curious Films Queenstown, praised the film-friendly attitude of both Contact Energy Ltd and the Central Otago District Council.

After the completion of filming, Runga's next big moment is the release of her single, Beautiful Collision, in Australia next week.
